How to Find a Telecommute Job

How to Find a Telecommute JobHow to Find a Telecommute JobAt some point in everyones career, the demands of work life and your personal life come crashing together and you need a little work flexibility. Thats where a telecommuting job makes perfect sense. Not only will working remotely give you the opportunity to work for any company in the world, but you can blend the professional and personal parts of your life seamlessly together for the ultimate in work-life balance. But lets say that youve never had a telecommuting job before. Youve only done the 9-5 office thing, and dutifully commuted to and from work. All thats about to change, job seekers.Heres how to find a telecommute jobAssess your situation. Youve made the decision to ditch office life and find flexible work. Before you gear up to go into job searching mode, youll first need to identify what type of flexible work you need. After all, the world of flexible work is not a one-size-fits-all thing, and thats why its important to determine what will work best for you. Do you want a full-time telecommuting job, where you only work from home, or do you want a part-time telecommuting position, where youll go into an office occasionally and work from home the rest of the time? Are you looking to do a compressed workweek, working longer hours in an office Monday-Thursday and having your Fridays off? Or do you want to pick and choose your work projects by being employed as a freelancer? Decide what type of flex fits in with your life, and then you can begin your job search based on that criteria.Decide what you want to do. A new job search is a great opportunity for you to reinvent your career- and yourself. Simply because youve worked in one career field for a while doesnt mean youre relegated to that industry forever. Take advantage of your job search to spread your wings professionally and think about what youd really like to do in this next stage of your career. Maybe youd like to become a teacher, or a pu blic relations professional. Or perhaps you want to take your love of Facebook and Pinterest and work as a media relations manager for a cosmetics company. Challenge yourself to think beyond what youve always done, and pursue something that youve always wanted to do As you go about your job search, you might realize that a career change is in your futureBe strategic in your search. While you might be super excited during the first few weeks of your job search, that excitement will wane if your job search goes on and on and onand you dont have any job interviews (or offers) in sight. One way to speed up your job search is by being strategic. Instead of applying for 100 jobs that youre not really interested in, apply for 15 that you really, truly want. Then customize your resume and cover letter to position yourself as a real candidate for those jobs. And when youre scrolling through job listings, pay close attention to those that offer remote work options. Usually, but not always, if a job listing doesnt mention work flexibility (such as work at home, remote, or virtual), it probably isnt a telecommute job. That way, you can save yourself a lot of time (and heartache) applying for a job and going through rounds of interviews, only to find out at the very end that the job is an in-office position only.Target companies.Lets say you have your heart set on working for a few specific organizations. But after weeks of trolling through job listings, you havent seen any positions pop up for those organizations. That doesnt mean they arent available, though. Theres nothing wrong with reaching out directly to companies youre interested in working for and finding out if they have any telecommuting positions on the horizon. Offer to send your job application in to the hiring manager. You might think its a waste of time, but when a telecommute job does become available, your job application will be at the top of the pile. You can start with database of over 30,000 companies that have offered flexible and telecommuting jobs before.Set yourself up for success. When you worked in an office, you completed much of your workload during the day. So it didnt really matter if you had a home office to complete your work assignments. As a potential remote worker, though, its super important to have a home office set up and ready to go- even before you have a job offer in hand. Why? Well, many job interviews, particularly those for telecommuting work, are done via phone or video conference, such as Skype. Beyond asking questions about the position, a potential employer is also fruchtwein likely checking out your work digs during a job interview. (If youre doing your job interview from your kitchen counter with crying kids in the background and your dog barking, chances are youre not going to get hired.) Having your home office will make you more prepared when you do accept a job offer, instead of scrambling around trying to get it ready at the same time youre start ing your new position.Network.Networking. Either you love it or hate it. Most people fall into the second category, but its still an important part of job searching. If you want to find a telecommute job, youll need to put on your best suit and a smile and do some networking. Attend both local events and online job fairs and webinars. And keep in mind that networking is all about attitude if you go into it thinking that its a waste of time, well, then it will be. But if youre determined to establish at least one solid new contact each time you network, you willRedo your resume (and cover letter). The resume and cover letter of a job seeker looking to find a telecommute job will look different from that of a person searching for a regular office job. If youve had previous remote work experience, you should highlight it in the job experience section. If this is the first time youll be working from home, youll need to go over your previous jobs and showcase any work experiences that you did, even in part, from home. Another area on your resume to shine a spotlight on, particularly if youre lacking telecommuting experience, is the skills section. Soft skills, such as the ability to self-manage, being highly organized, and an excellent communicator, are all qualities that a hiring manager looking to fill a remote position will find highly desirable.Be wary of job scams.Maybe youve held off on finding a telecommuting job because youre afraid of job scams. And rightly so, since its estimated that out of every 100 jobs advertising the ability to work from home, only one is a real work-at-home job. But you shouldnt let scammers scam you out of the right to work remotely. Youll just need to be aware of some things while you job hunt, such as never giving out personal information (such as your bank account info, Social Security number, etc.) and being wary of instant job offers without an interview, instant message job interviews, or those job listings offering lots of mo ney for not a lot of work. Instead, use reputable niche job search boards, such as, and most importantly, listen to your gut. Remember, if its too good to be true, it almost always is.This primer on how to find a telecommute job should help you as you begin your job search. Take the time to make quality choices, from the jobs you apply for, to the networking events you attend, to redesigning your resume and cover letter, to the companies you apply to. Making smart decisions will make your job search faster, and dare we say it, fun, as you find your way to flexible work, freedom, and some serious work-life balanceReaders, what would be your ideal telecommute job? Use Free Time to Advance Your Job Search

Use Free Time to Advance Your Job SearchUse Free Time to Advance Your Job SearchWeve all heard this one Its easier to find a job when you already have one. Which makes sense. Employers are always willing to hire someone another company has vetted and entrusted. What this old adage doesnt factor in is the time it takes to conduct a job search. When youre looking for a job, the process itself can amount to a full-time job.How are you supposed to add the commitment of a job search to your busy work schedule? It requires some discipline, but it can be done. You just need to divide the elements of your job search among the bits of free time you have throughout the week.1. 5-10 minutesThis is the amount of time we most often waste. How many of us make a point of being productive when we have five extra minutes? With a little determination, you can turn five minutes here and there into a vital part of your job search process. You just have to fill those five-minute gaps wisely.Browsing job listings can be accomplished in small bits of time. Websites such as Simply Hired make it possible to take your job search anywhere. Job listings can be accessed from your smart phone. Thats right- all that time spent playing Candy Crush could be bettering your career. So download a job search app (Simply Hired has one available on iTunes and Android), and use those five minutes to your advantage.Tip If youre using the Simply Hired mobile app, sort job listings by date. This way you can minimize the time you spend looking at old jobs and allow no new jobs to slip under your radar.Consider signing up for an email alert service, which Simply Hired also offers. Email alerts provide you with a daily update of jobs posted with your keywords of choice, which is great for filling five minutes, because how long does it take to read an email?2. An hourLets say you get home from work at 630 p.m. and have a dinner reservation at 8 p.m. You may need to block out a few minutes to freshen up and reserve some time for travel. Besides that you have a solid hour with nothing to do. Everyone has these blocks of time between activities. During your job search you need to make the most of them.An hour isnt enough time to rewrite a resume or compose a cover letter. It is enough time to jump on LinkedIn or Twitter and read news thats related to your industry and to network with other professionals on social media. Companies always use referrals to fill job openings, so engage with individuals in your industry. Sharing items and commenting in discussion groups can be a great way make networking connections. If you can track down recruiters, hiring managers, etc., and make yourself known, you can develop an inside track to a job.extra Staying up on industry news, as discussed here, can prove useful during the job interview process. So when you have an hour to spare, do some industry reading as well.3. A lazy Sunday or a rainy dayI live in San Francisco, so I get treated to a number o f wet days when its rather pointless to even leave the house if I want to keep my feet dry. Maybe you endure rainy days, and youve certainly had a lazy Sunday. Instead of letting it turn into a lost day, spend time wrapping up some of the more time-consuming aspects of your job search such as the application process, resume or cover letter.Sunday is a great day to finalize your application because youll want to send it on Monday morning. Studies show Monday is the best day of the week to apply for a job. Be among the Monday applicants by finishing your application on Sunday.4. Your lunch breakIt can be tricky to conduct a job search when you have a job, especially once youre in the phone and in-person interview stages. There may be a temptation to use your lunch break to schedule these activities. This is risky. How often is your lunch break delayed? How often do 11 a.m. meetings run long? Now imagine youre sitting in that meeting and your interviewer calls and your phone vibrates. elend good. Its always better to avoid booking yourself during your lunch break. Use lunch to network or post updates to your professional social channels. If you need time for an interview, take a day off or get permission to leave work early. The interviewer knows youre employed and will work around your schedule.Although a job search can be time-consuming, you can fit it into the various chunks of time you have throughout your week. The trick is recognizing what you can accomplish in the time you have.

Boost Your Resume the Right Way! How to Become Strategically Well-Rounded

Boost Your Resume the Right Way How to Become Strategically Well-RoundedBoost Your Resume the Right Way How to Become Strategically Well-RoundedSo you eat healthy (most of the time), you go to the gym, you give 100% at work, you volunteer on the weekends, and you also make sure to enjoy yourself with friends. You, by all accounts, are considered well-rounded.Kudos to you Now, lets apply that to your professional life. Even though youre great at your current job duties, being well-rounded professionally- which means gaining experience beyond just one functional area- is an important element to your long-term success. Why? Because being well-rounded means you can step outside of your current role and take on new things- and thats how you get the exciting new assignments and projects, which often dont actually fit into anyones job description. Whats more, as you climb the ladder and are up for management positions, youll need skills in a variety of different areas to help you succeed. If youre currently a social media manager but eventually want to head up a marketing department, for example, youll need to pick up expertise in brand development, advertising, and finance, too. That said, therbeies a difference between collecting random skills and gaining new experiences that will make you strategically well-rounded. So, here are a few questions to ask yourself to identify the skills that will be most important for your future- so you can go out and build them. What Gaps in Knowledge Do I Have?First, pull out your resume and take inventory of yourself. What are some valuable qualities or skills you already possess- and what do you wish you had? Youll often identify strategic skills just by paying attention to your gaps or areas of weakness and identifying ways to strengthen them.If you know you struggle with delegation or want to hone your leadership traits, for example, perhaps you could take on an intern or mentor junior employees.Or, if your emails tend to be long-w inded or you wish you were a better communicator, taking a writing class would be a great way to grow. What Skills Do Those Around Me Have?Next, look around, and start noticing what other well-rounded colleagues or clients are doing. Particularly consider people in the positions you want to move into or attain What do they do well, what could they do better, and what skill sets do their positions require? If everyone in the level above you has to manage budgets, for example, look for ways to plan budgets on smaller projects or events. If most people in the roles youre checking out at PR companies have experience in public speaking, thats a great distributionspolitik to focus your time and energy. What Gaps in Knowledge Does My Team Have?On the flip side, pay attention to the knowledge gaps on your team. If theres knowledge or experience that no one else really has- but that could help you all on an upcoming project- that could be a great place for you to take on new skills and really shine. For instance, if no one in the department ever wants to make client presentations, getting some public speaking training would be a huge boost for the team. If no one on your email marketing team knows how to code, why not take on the challenge? What Characteristics Does My Boss Value Most? Finally, think, watch, and listen to your boss. Consider the characteristics she possesses, as well as the ones that she doesnt, and fill in the gaps. If you can handle tasks that would otherwise be challenging for her (say, you know she loathes Excel), thats an easy way to make life easier for her and at the same time take on more responsibility. Also listen to the comments and compliments she gives. What traits does your boss admire in others? What praise has she given lately and to whom? Through this type of feedback, you can glean the qualities that she values- and get to work on those skills.Being well-rounded doesnt mean you have to be great at everything, or even involved in every aspec t of your companys work. But if you strategically expand your expertise based on your own strengths and weaknesses and those of your team, youll add a huge amount of value to your organization- not to mention your resume.Photo of woman working courtesy of Shutterstock.

Change your Workplace Behavior to Succeed at Work

Change yur Workplace Behavior to Succeed at WorkChange yur Workplace Behavior to Succeed at WorkChange your Workplace Behavior to Succeed at Work Gregerman, author of The Necessity of Strangers(Jossey-Bass, 2013)For many of us, our work lives are characterized by the following behaviorsA focus on getting our work done.A tendency to stay at our desks.Reliance on our expertise and the things we already know (because thats what we are being paid to do).Collaboration and brainstorming with people who are a lot like us.Rarely looking beyond our walls for ideas and inspiration.Avoiding, at almost all costs, stepping out of our comfort zones. And a tendency to avoid people who are different than us.Theres nothing wrong with these workplace behaviors, but they are not likely to enable us to create real breakthroughs, find the best people, build more meaningful collaboration, gain new customers, or become a better leader. They are the living and breathing, embodiment of a closed mindset and a guarantee that we will lead only incrementally to better work and personal lives.Contrast these with the following set of workplace behaviors behaviors that we can and should be trying to incorporate in our everyday livesA focus on finding the real potential in our work.Getting up and away from our desks to connect with colleagues in new ways and engage the world around us.Acknowledging the strengths and limitations of our expertise and seeking to find new knowledge and approaches that will make us even more successful (because thats what were really being paid to do).Seeking out opportunities to collaborate and brainstorm with people who are very different than us.Consistently looking beyond our walls for ideas and inspiration.Looking for opportunities to stretch outside our comfort zones. And, seeking to engage with strangers especially if they are very different than us.These are the living and breathing, embodiment of an open mindset and a guarantee that we will be more open to reaching our full potential.Grow your Success at WorkRealize that our degree of openness to new people, ideas, and possibilities is something we can develop over time. In fact we can continue to develop it over our entire lives and careers as we turn new behaviors into consistent habits.Think about all of the ways that you have become more open over the years, paying particular attention to the types of people, experiences, and sources of information that you now have a greater appreciation for. While many people believe that they become less open to new things over time and more set in their ways, my experience working with more than three hundred companies and organizations is quite the opposite.Take the First StepThe biggest challenge is getting people and organizations to be willing to take the first step a step that is often as easy as getting up and taking a walk with our eyes wide open.Since 2003, I have begun many assignments by teaching our customers to do exactly that th rough a process we call Team Learning Adventures. At the core of this process is simple and energizing exploration of the world beyond our workplaces in which visits to other businesses, museums, neighborhoods, schools, restaurants, and artistic performances become an invitation to rediscover our innate gift of curiosity and the value of being open to new people, places, ideas, and perspectives. And a chance to discover the real power of strangers from all walks for life strangers who are vital to our success in almost anything that matters. So now lets see how to put an open mindset and these workplace behaviors into practice in the real world of business and the rest of our lives.Reprinted by permission from the publisher, Jossey-Bass, a Wiley brand, from The Necessity of Strangers by Alan Gregerman Copyright (c) 2013 by Alan Gregerman.Author BioAlan Gregerman is author of The Necessity of Strangers(Jossey-Bass, 2013) and President and Chief Innovation Officer of VENTURE WORKS Inc. , a strategy and innovation firm that helps leading companies to unlock the genius in all of their people. Resume Writing Tips to Start the New Year Successfully

Resume Writing Tips to Start the New Year SuccessfullyResume Writing Tips to Start the New Year SuccessfullyResume Writing Tips to Start the New Year SuccessfullyCourtesy of Wil Stewart from unsplash.comNew Years just around the corner and this is usually the time when we bring a bunch of New Years resolutions. We decide to ditch unhealthy foods, go to gym, do things we havent done in past year, and we also decide this is the year when were finally going to make a step forward in our career. Obviously, ditching unhealthy foods and going to the gym dont stand a chance. Somehow, we cant say goodbye to delicious pizza and whos got enough time for gym anyway? In the end, we only have one resolution left and thats career progress. In all honesty, thats even more achievable than going to the gym on daily basis.Quality resume stands between you and desired jobTo finally do something about your career and find a better (or any) job, its important to have a high-quality resume. I like to comp are it to password-protected door. Poor resume results with Access Denied message on the tiny screen, while good resume opens the door and leads you to your next destination your job. What most people overlook is the fact that resume has to be adapted to the current trends. To departure the year 2016 with advantage over other people who are going to apply for the same job as you will, I listed all important things you should consider when writing your resume.Format for 2016Before you even start resume writing process, take a few moments to think about the fact that most people use the same strategy as you do. This also includes using a wide range of templates you can find online. The best way to get hired is to have a resume that stands out. This isnt too complicated to accomplish. For example, you can start just by mentioning the basic info and other skills on a blank piece of paper and later make some adjustments to make it look professional. Additionally, you can always hire someo ne to write your resume for you (theres notlagehing wrong with that). That way, your resume will look perfect, highly professional and will stand out among all others.Resume writing in 2016I always struggled whenever I had to write my resume. Its because I thought I have to mention as much info as possible in order to impress the recruiter etc. However, thats not always such a great idea, particularly if we take into account that average recruiter spends between 5 and 7 seconds looking at one resume. Its important to focus on emphasizing all strengths and skills you have to do a certain job successfully. Your resume should contain info about education, experience, or even some awards you have received that you think recruiter would find interesting.Dos and donts for 2016DO tailor your resume according to the job youre applying to. You have more chances to get hired if your resume matches all requirements listed by the recruiter.DONT use a same resume for every job. Generic resumes ar ent that beneficial. Yes, you dont spend hours on creating a perfect resume, but its highly unlikely it will match all requirements needed for certain job.DO only info that is relevant for specific job making sure the most important skills or achievements are listed on the top.DONT overdo it. Sometimes, less is more.DO list accomplishments, achievements or even experiences within a certain job role youve done before. This way, the recruiter will recognize your capabilities.DONT mention your job title only and leave it at that. They are more interested in things youve done within the job role e.g. came up with certain plan and program that improved students grades in school etc.DO specify your achievements. For example, increased sales or website traffic by 30% in 2 months.DONT be vague and say Increased sales only. That doesnt offer enough info.DO use a subtle, minimalist format that is easy to read.DONT use flowery designs, over-the-top formats and templates that are confusing.DO read entire resume once again look for grammar or spelling mistakes.DONT submit your resume without proofreading it first.DO polish your LinkedIn profile and other social media profiles.DONT publish inappropriate content on your social media profiles. Recruiters pay attention to how your act on social media as well. With the rise of internet, social media became a powerful tool that is of high importance for your career.Stats resumes + social media and their role in recruitment76% of resumes are rejected due to unprofessional email address.88% of resumes are rejected due to photo.Back in 2000, 22% of resumes were submitted via email or posted on some website. In 2014, more than 90% of resumes are sent by email or posted on websites.Applicant Tracking Softwares are able to eliminate about 75% of applicants.427,000 resumes are posted on Monster.com each week.89% of recruiters have hired someone via LinkedIn.68%of employers will find you on Facebook.93% of employers look at candidates social media accounts before they decide whether to hire someone.Working on your resume to have higher chances of getting hired is the ideal way of starting a New Year successfully. You should always bear in mind that sometimes more in less and instead of bombarding and trying to fit everything into resume thus making it difficult to read you should opt for mentioning skills and qualities that are relevant for a specific job.

This is how I found peacefulness in my life

This is how I found peacefulness in my life This is how I found peacefulness in my life Solitude and creativity have been in my arsenal for some time now. They’re the best way to confront the inhumanity and sorrow one witnesses in law enforcement.Suicides. Murder. Accident victims. Child abuse. Such things are obscenities that crush the human spirit.I was a cop for over twenty six years. The last ten years I served as Chief of Police. The years of shift work, little sleep, fear, moments of pure adrelanine and stress took their toll.Cops learn to be stoic. We bury our feelings, mask our emotions and get the job done. It’s only later, in the sanctuary of our homes, that the demons come. Memories, images and scenes of carnage that reside persistently in our psyche. Each of us has to find our own way. Our own salvation and methods to process it all and stay healthy. For me, my family played a crucial role. Exercise helped. But mostly, solitude and creativity were the ballasts that steadied my course. It became politically difficultI was constantly drawing as a kid and serv ed as an editorial cartoonist on several newspapers. I did the cartooning on the side while working full time as a cop.Unfortunately, as I rose through the ranks, it became politically difficult to continue with my editorial cartoons. So, I turned to landscape painting.I didn’t have time to go back to school and study art, so I sought instruction from one of the best landscape painters in the country, Scott L. Christensen.I flew to Idaho and took a workshop with Scott. The next year I flew back for an advanced workshop. The year after that, Scott invited me to a private salon with one other artist.I was a bit of a noveltyI wasn’t like most of Scott Christensen’s students. They had art backgrounds, worked in design or were full time professional artists. I was a full time cop who liked to paint. I was a bit of a novelty. The artful cop.Scott Christensen took a liking to me, which led to that week long salon in his studio. What an experience it was. One on one instruction. Daily outdoor painting. Total art immersion. It was life changing.“Autumn path” by John P. WeissI discovered that I fell in love with plein air (outdoor) painting. Standing near those Idaho cottonwoods, and taking in the grandeur of the Tetons, stirred something in me.The wind in the trees and the silent solitude of being alone in nature calms the soul. Heals the spirit. Time stands still. The siren song of mountains and ocean waves My professional law enforcement world involved responsibility and the weight of leadership. The phones rang, my cell phone buzzed, emails pour into my computer. There was a community to protect and politicians to keep informed. It was a privilege to serve as Chief of Police and I am proud to have helped so many in my police career. But I grew tired. The siren song of mountains and ocean waves tugged at me. Sometimes, after a long day at the office, I swear I heard my paint box whispering to me late at night. Its voice was faint but the message strong and clear:“Take off that gun belt. Set down your ballistic vest. Grab your brushes and gear. Leave the noise and sadness and responsibility behind. Let go. Paint.”And so I did. I retired early, and dove into my creative life. It’s how I found peacefulness. By embracing what I truly am, an artist. My family and I moved to another state. I immersed myself in painting, artwork and writing. I’m proud of my law enforcement career, but I†™ve never looked back. Only forward.I was the artful cop. Now, I’m a full time artist, and there’s a serenity in my soul. It feels good. There are always optionsHow about you? Are you where you want to be, or do you long for something else? Yes, it’s not easy to change your life. There are responsibilities and commitments. But there are always options. You could say no to some things to carve out more time for your passion. You could downsize and relocate to a more affordable area. That’s what I did. Unlike California, Nevada has no income tax, which allows me to keep a lot more of my pension. Homes are more affordable, too.Take the time to figure out what’s really important to you. Let go of the stuff you don’t need or that’s dragging you down. Of course, be smart about it and don’t jeopardize your family. Some changes take time, patience and planning.People change their lives for the better every day. By getting healthier. By making their passions more of a priority. B y changing careers, relocating and learning to live with less clutter and possessions. You can too. It worked for me, and my life is more peaceful. I’ll bet that with a little planning, you can improve your life, and find the serenity we all dream of.Before you goI’m John P. Weiss. I draw cartoons, paint, and write about life. Thanks for reading. This  article  first appeared on  Medium.

4 keys to success in todays rapidly changing business climate

4 keys to success in today’s rapidly changing business climate 4 keys to success in today’s rapidly changing business climate Geoff Tuff  is a Principal at Deloitte Consulting LLP and a senior leader of the Innovation and Applied Design practices.  Steven Goldbach  is also a  Principal at Deloitte, where he serves as Chief Strategy Officer. The two recently sat down to discuss why the old business playbooks aren’t working anymore, and offer more insights from their new book,  Detonate: Why- and How- Corporations Must Blow Up Best Practices (and Bring a Beginner’s Mind) to Survive. This conversation has been edited and condensed. To watch the full version, click the video here.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  Geoff:  You’ve been a strategist for a long time, and you’ve talked about sources of advantage. What’s happening these days with advantage?Steven:  Well, the long-standing advantages are getting disrupted by new technologies that make possible businesses that are an order of magnitud e better quality, or an order of magnitude lower cost. For example, in the world of radio, you used to have to spend a lot of money to erect radio towers, and now with a few lines of code, you’ve basically got radio’s business model in Spotify, which is cheaper to distribute.Or if you wanted to get a custom-made suit, you used to have to go to a tailor, right? That was your only option. And now you can use an app like MTailor to take a 3D image of your body and upload it, and then they’ll send you the same custom-made suit at a lower cost.Technological advances are driving this movement from the known to the unknown. And how are organizations responding? They’re trying to apply the playbooks from the known world to the unknown world- and that’s the problem we’re trying to solve.Remember the first day that you started your job? You probably sat down with your career advisor, and they said something like, “If you want to be successful at this organization, here are all t he things that I did when I was in your shoes.” That was the recipe for success- “Do what my forebears did, and you, too, can be successful.”The problem is, [as we transition into a world of] uncertainty, we start to get system failure. We’re seeing this vicious cycle where you put a business model out into the world and, all of a sudden, consumers don’t like it- it fails. And then the boss comes in and says, “Well, did you do what I told you to do? Did you follow the playbook?”And then they start to do all the predictable things from the world of the known. They examine the data, they analyze, they try to understand what went wrong in their risk models. Then they put it back into the marketplace and, lo and behold, it fails again. Now someone more senior comes in, and all of a sudden, you’re going towards a world where you’re [like] Blockbuster video, defining your business model as, “We’re in the  store  business, not the DVD-to-home business.”“In everythi ng you do, focus on human behavior.”Geoff:  No one’s going to change their company overnight, but you do need to instill a different mindset. There were four key principles that we identified in the course of our research, two of which have to do with thinking differently. One is that at the heart of systemic change and getting rid of old playbooks is the notion that, in everything you do, focus on human behavior. No matter how digital companies become, the most basic economic unit of analysis is still human behavior. And I don’t just mean customers- it can be customers, employees, regulators, suppliers, or partners, but someone somewhere has to change their behavior in order for a performance curve to change. And the [advanced] version of that is understanding: what is the accumulation of human behaviors that creates economic value for you? From the beginning of your value to the end, who are the human beings involved? And then say, “If we look at the entire system, which one behavioral change would have disproportionate value for us?”If we spent our time saying, “What are the human behaviors we’re trying to drive?”, and then focusing our resources on actually achieving that behavioral change, that would lead to a completely different way of doing business. The second “think differently” principle is about bringing a beginner’s mind,  a well-known concept from Zen Buddhism.  My favorite quote about that comes from D.T. Suzuki, and it’s something like, “In the beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities. In the expert’s mind, there are few.”One of the ways you [increase] efficiency is to find people who have been there, done that, or lived through that experience before, and have them bring their expertise to the table in order to make a decision. [Although] when you bring expertise to the table, you narrow the aperture in terms of possible solutions. [But not] if you bring a beginner to the table and say, “Go try to do this.†Imagine the average startup entrepreneur, the digital disrupter- when they come to a challenge, they don’t say, “Jeeze, how do I execute on this using my legacy business system?” No, they say, “How would I do this better? How would I better achieve the behavioral change that I’m after?”“In the beginner’s mind, there are many possibilities. In the expert’s mind, there are few.”Steven:  Right. If you think differently, you’ve also got to be willing to act differently. The thing that [professionals] need to do the most is [focus on] minimal viable moves. We took that idea from the world of product design, which often starts with minimal viable products, and extended it to almost any business decision that you can make: “How could you do something in a small manner that would [help you] learn about the human behaviors you’re trying to cause?”Geoff:  And you have to do it super quickly- just go out and try it.Steven: Super quickly and super cheaply. Particula rly if you’re in that uncertain world, you want to figure out to what extent you can change the behavior that you need to change. Can you do it? How much will it cost? You’re going out and constantly testing, consistently making minimal viable moves. When I was at  Forbes  magazine, we wanted to corner the market on the CueCat, a device that [allowed] you to scan a barcode on a print advertising page, and it would take you to a webpage. We wanted to know if we could create more value for advertisers by creating more engagement, so we were going to be bold and send out a million CueCats to our subscribers. But the issue was the cost of the devices and mailing it to them- it was a good chunk of money. This was the [year] 2000, and the CueCat was a wired device. You had to use it while you were plugged in to your desktop computer, and as it turns out, people don’t always read their  Forbesmagazine sitting in front of their desktop. They like to read it, say, on a plane, or a train, or the subway. So it turned out our hypothesis was wrong- we couldn’t change the behavior. But that doesn’t mean that it wasn’t worth testing- it just means we didn’t need to send the CueCat to a million people.  [We could have sent it to] just thirty,  watched what they were doing, and figured it out.“Whatever problem you’re facing, go figure out how you could design a test, or design something to try in the real world.”Geoff:  It sounds like the opposite of the old world, which is all about analysis. Don’t get rid of data completely, because you’ll still have some opportunities where it’s going to work. But these minimally viable moves are all about, “Let’s not spend time analyzing- let’s just go try it.”Steven:  Exactly. And to clarify, when we say that the data is no good, we mean the historical, syndicated data that [already] exists. We want to create new data by going out and giving our customers something to respond to in the real world. So if the t hird principle is about making minimal viable moves, the fourth one is embracing impermanence. If you make a move today, you can’t be so wedded to it that you won’t be willing to blow it up later. The world is moving really fast, so [that move] is not likely to last forever. It’s silly when people ask questions like, “If I stay [in this organization,] where will I be in 15 years?” We’d have to assume that we can [predict] the steps [of an organization’s evolution,] and that’s just no longer a relevant conversation. We have to be willing to embrace that we don’t know what might happen, and therefore, we should be more focused on the things that are working today, and what we can learn about the future. What advice would you give to people who want to apply some of these ideas?Geoff:  The first thing to do, especially if you’re in a position of authority, is to ask different, better questions. Don’t ask about the return on investment,  ask about return on behavior.  We should care about financials, but forecasts should be based on observable outcomes in the market. So if I were to ask you, “Can you figure out what the return of driving this behavior versus that behavior would be?”, I bet you’d see significant change throughout the entire system. What [advice would you give]?Steven:  I think you’ve just got to pick something and try it. Don’t overanalyze it. Whatever problem you’re facing, go figure out how you could design a test, or design something to try in the real world. We’re spending way more time trying to learn about something before we make a choice- instead, let’s decide today and see the response. That’s the best way to study something. This article originally appeared on Heleo. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Chicago Unemployment Rate

Chicago Unemployment Rate Chicago Unemployment Rate Chicago Unemployment Rate Chicago is the commercial and economic capital of the Midwest. Much like the rest of this region of the country, it struggled at the onset of the recession, but has since begun to see its unemployment rate decrease. Unemployment in Chicago Prior to the Great Recession, the Chicago unemployment rate hovered around five percent, below the national average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS.) However, this rate ballooned to almost 13 percent during the height of the recession. In 2014, Chicagos unemployment rate made a drastic turnaround. In February 2014, the rate hovered at nine percent. More recently, in May, 2015, Chicagos unemployment was around the six percent mark. Recovery from the 2008 Recession Chicagos recovery from the recession was sluggish in comparison to the rest of the country, although the city has recovered far more dramatically in the past year in comparison with the US unemployment rate. The Illinois state government played a large role in this drop. With debt obligations totaling more than $127 billion, Illinois continued to pay unemployment benefits longer than other states. With 29 Fortune 500 companies in the greater Chicago area, unemployment continues to fall. Another challenge for Chicago is the ability to find skilled workers in emerging markets such as high-tech industries. The problem is unique to Chicago, as it still is home to many of the best schools in the country. The city must compete with other tech-focused cities such as Boston and New York for top IT talent. The lack of skilled workers is starting to fall, however, as the city ranks 37th in education according to recent Forbes rankings. Thriving Industries in Chicago The citys location on Lake Michigan makes it a prime hub for distribution of goods and transportation of goods and travelers. It is the third largest economy in the country and the ninth largest in the world. Publishing, insurance, financial services, technology, and tourism are also major industries in Chicago that began the citys recovery from the recession. In addition, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange provides a major trading forum for futures and commodities. The construction industry has also recovered, especially in the downtown area, with many high-rise commercial and residential buildings planned for the near future. Other high-demand jobs in the area include information technology, sales, and surprisingly, manufacturing, which unlike the rest of the Rust Belt, continued to thrive in Chicago amidst the Great Recession. The sheer number of people in the city also provide a booming healthcare system, as Baby Boomers continue to age and require more intensive medical attention. Recent Commercial Successes Chicago, like other Midwestern cities such as Saint Louis, enjoys a status as a startup company incubator, but on a far greater scale. Many of these companies are part of the high-tech industry, betting on the increased need for networking and software solutions for major area companies. Other high-tech businesses produce apps for smartphones or other gaming systems and video games. Industries in Recession The recession caused many people who lived in the city to look for more affordable housing in the surrounding suburbs. While this didnt cause a huge fluctuation in the workforce, it did make local businesses suffer. Thus, the retail and dining industries felt the hit, while white-collar industries were less impacted by the exodus out of the city. Current Chicago Rankings According to recent Forbes rankings, Chicago is 107th on the list as the best place to do business in the country. This somewhat influences the job growth rate, which currently stands at 1.5 percent. Projected job growth annually for the next ten years is 1.5 percent as well, while the high-tech sectors make up 4.7 percent of the workforce. Another economic aspect that plagues the city is a high cost of living, which makes it the 155th city in the cost of doing business. The lack of skilled workers is starting to fall, however, as the city ranks 37th in education. A key measure of labor supply, the unemployment rate is defined as the percentage of the total labor force that is unemployed but actively seeking employment and willing to work. How to Be a Good Leader

How to Be a Good Leader How to Be a Good Leader Strengths-based Leadership encourages us to look into our strengths to identify what works and doesn’t work for us as leaders. I think you should go beyond that.Learning about leadership starts when you experience someone else’s leadership style. You learn from every single boss you have ever had. Both the good and the bad. Same with the parenting styles you experience. Look into your upbringing. What can you learn from it?I recently realized that my leadership style strongly reflects the parenting style of my parents. As a result, I’m no longer ’s CMO. I’ve adopted those values and principles and that’s how I led of marketing team at , a team of 5 people from 4 nationalities. Do I have things to share? Yes.Should you learn from me? It depends. My 8 PrinciplesWhen I was a child, my mom dad - provided safety - they created a safe environment, free of worries and dangers; when a neighbourhood boy was bullying me, mom talked to him and honestly scared the shit out of him, so he never bothered me after that!helped me grow - they provided a nurturing environment; they attended exhibitions and took my sister and I with them, ate moderately and healthy, went to the mountain every weekend and brought us with them, read books to my sister and I.gave me hope - they confirmed that things will be okay; when I fell on the ground, they helped me get up and said “everything will be okay, your knee will heal quick” showed me compassion - they understood and respected my feelings. When my parents heard that my boyfriend in primary school had broken up with me, they said they were sorry I felt that way. were honest - they spoke openly about what we can afford or not, so they managed my expectations well and kept their word. I only got a Mickey Mouse magazine or a Happy Meal just a few times throughout my childhood, but that was fine. respected me expected respect in return - they never crossed a line and didn’t allow me to make a joke of them either, not even once. taught me how to dream big - I was 5 years old and my mom was taking me to German lessons when she said “learn German and one day you can travel to Germany or Austria and ski in the Alps”; at the time I was skiing down a hill in the neighbourhood, so the Alps sounded absolutely outstanding (and they are, as I saw a few years ago!)congratulated me on my successes “you’re our little hero!” Mom always said that whatever challenge I overcame or accomplishment I had. Each of those strongly shaped my understanding of what’s right and wrong at home, as well as in school or the workplace. And here’s how I applied them as a CMO. Please note, much like in parenting, sometimes we have the right intentions, but the result is different. The principles below show what I’ve aimed for. I have to admit I didn’t succeed with them 100% of the time.#1 Help them grow As a leader, I aim to encourage people when they are scared, I push their boundaries support them in crisi s or when they feel low give as much feedback as I can to any piece of work. I expect high quality of anyone, regardless of their seniority, title, or years of work experience.give both positive and constructive feedback that aims the same thing to encourage a growth mindset, not just to be “good”. When a colleague challenges me, I usually thank them for doing that as I’d like to encourage them to question my decisions or directions rather than be “good” by blindly following me and always be approving of what I say. support them to develop their strengths, even when outside of their comfort zone “Vessy has been challenging me every single day. That’s why I jokingly started calling her Chief Challenger. One time she challenged me to go to London on a work trip, on my own. It’s a city that always made me unusually anxious so at the time it felt completely outside of my comfort zone. Despite being scared I ended up going and once it was over, I realized I had overcome t he fear. She successfully pushed my boundaries and I’m proud I went on that trip. That experience still gives me courage and makes my out-of-my-comfort-zone experiences more comfortable.” #2 Give them hope As a leader, I aim to explain that overnight success is not overnight, so when success doesn’t come right away, the team has hope and keeps trying explain we all do things that are hard and do them for the first time and we eventually figure it out and if we don’t, we will figure something else outbring hope to them, even when I’m struggling with it myself; knowing they rely on me, pushes me to find hope myself get people enthusiastic about the future our company vision, strategy, or even next month’s campaign “Since I’m very self-critical I can easily go into an Impostor Syndrome state if I don’t see results quickly enough. It was especially hard to try out a bunch of tactics for advertising optimization and see our costs decrease only slightly. Vessy helped me focus on the amount of things we tried and learned, reminding me how far we’ve come, even if the numbers didn’t show it. Then I could move forward with restored motivation and came to several new solutions to try out.” Without hope, the worlds looks and feels meaningless and people become helpless. That’s valid just as much at work!  #3 Show them compassion As a leader, I aim to Actively listen and be present Acknowledge their feelings (If I don’t care that someone is struggling, that results in two things - they get discouraged and I’m an asshole) Determine if I should give advice or instead I should give them space so they can figure things out and fix them on their own Be there for them when they struggle outside of work, too. “Vessy has never stopped being incredibly supportive of me and everyone on the team, particularly as I’ve evolved from being more of a writer into a broader SEO role. One ironic by-product has been that we came to a point where there was l ess of a need for a head of marketing. Everyone now takes full responsibility for their own domain and the whole operation works smoothly. You could say she’s a victim of her own success there.” I believe that lack of compassion results in emotional invalidation. It’s sneaky and powerful. It creates a distance between you and the other person and damages their confidence. Three things if you want to work on Compassion: What’s emotional invalidationHow to improve the level of validation 5 things NOT to say#4 Be honest earn their trust As a leader, I aim to act as a role model and I’m aware that everything I do can be replicated by anyone in my team, so I’d better do things as best as I can!keep my promises (and keep private matters we have discussed private) Be authentic and candid, e.g. tell them when I disagree and when I’m having a hard time Encourage honesty and establish trust between all team members to help them collaborate more smoothly. If I’m not honest wit h them, why would they be honest with me? Delegating, for example, would become impossible or pointless. If they don’t respect me and trust me, why would they care which direction I attempt to lead them? That would make any strategy, campaign, or tactic chaotic and inapplicable. “As an illustrator, I’ve never been too interested in business, marketing analytics or numbers in general. I actually, never thought they could have anything to do with my job. AT ALL. Vessy’s honest questions and challenges showed me how important it is, to back up my work with business goals if I want to make an impact. When I was working on developing ’s illustration identity, I managed to put in action all the lessons learned during our one-on-ones. Answering the questions, “why are we doing that” and “how it could impact ’s business goals”, helped me realise that drawing cool stuff is not enough, if they’re not the right cool stuff. And on top of that, the whole team was able to se e how awesome illustrations are, when used the right way.”#5 Create a safe space for them As a leader, I aim to provide safety and security when people feel threatened; that doesn’t mean protecting them, but more so empowering them how to face the challenge and helping them identify numerous ways to do it teach them how to deal with ambiguity and embrace change; I show them the freedom and the wide range of opportunities that come in times of great flux. Oh, we do this pretty well at @ ? https://t.co/LX2PcIDx8j Tatiana Rehmova (@TRehmova) August 31, 2018#6 Expect the other side to follow the same principlesAs a leader, I aim to Encourage constructive, courageous, healthy behavior rather than focus on punishing the unwanted habits. To address things, when an employee has hurt my feelings or shown me disrespect. The alternative is to leave things to stay unresolved and bottle up until it explodes. You don’t want a partner, friend, colleague, boss, parent, or sibling who jeopardiz es the pillars of the relationship (respect, trust, safety, etc), do you? For example, my girlfriend and I built a habit to check-in on the health of our relationship. We don’t do it in a structured way or at a specific period of time. We casually ask each other questions that allow us to get feedback from each other and understand if there’s something we should work on as a couple or as individuals. Then, we discuss ways we can tackle it and commit to them. Last time we did that, we put them down. One of those commitments was to go to spoken word poetry together and tonight we’re going to one. #7 Teach them how to dream bigAs a leader, I aim to Show them how to see potential beyond whats visible to themThat allows the team to spot the big opportunities and chase the big results.  I know of few leaders that would take on a college student with little-to-no professional experience to write a resume on someone they admire, but Vessy’s decision to ask me to work on Rupaul’s Resume is what led to me taking on an internship at and getting to know some extraordinary people. Not only has this gifted me valuable experience, but have gone on to be featured in top-tier media such as Fast Company, Gay Times, and more because of this. These are achievements I never thought would be possible in five years  let alone a few months! Vessy has been a creator of opportunity that has inspired me and challenged me at every step. With her guidance, Ive been afforded many things that I never thought I would have authenticity in the workplace, professional drive, the freedom to dream big.” #8 Congratulate them on their successes As a leader, I aim to Take the time to say “well done!”, “fantastic job”, “i’m pressed”, “so proud of you”Show my gratitude yes, they are paid to do their job, but I don’t take a job well done for granted; I genuinely appreciate this kind of people, the hard work and attitude they have put into it! Sometimes I check in with myself if I do that and when I realize I haven’t done it for awhile, I reach out to the individual or the team. One of the top 3 reasons why people change jobs, validated by research with our users and with our employees, is that they didn’t feel valued and appreciated. Responding vs Initiating: 3 tools that help me follow the eight principlesLeadership is built on relationships. In any relationship there’s a line that once crossed, it’s hard to retrieve from. While responding means we’re always catching up, it’s important to have different mechanisms, or tools, that allow you to initiate conversations rather than respond to the final situations when nothing can be repaired, discussed, or restored. These are my ways of deal with things early on, often way before they have even started. One-on-one meetingsWe’ve been having 1on1 meetings for over 2 years now. I’ve had over 200+ with various team members. Over time their objective and format have evolved a lot accor ding to the needs of the company, as well as adapted to the respective lead’s style. During my 1on1s, for example, I’d always ask - what would you like us to talk about today? Is there anything that’s bothering you? What would you do with X if you were leading the team? Expectation documentsThese are simple one-pager documents that have 3 sections: Performance (e.g. attract X new unpaid website visitors), Behavior (e.g. come prepared to meetings), Skills (e.g. advance SEO). They show the person what to focus on in the next 6-week period. As a marketing lead I used to find it super handy as it was helping me set my own expectations towards the employee, make sure they are communicated, as well as check if they are understood by the employee. On the other side, that was giving clarity and direction to the employee. So every 6 weeks we’d meet up and compare notes on how the previous period went and what’s needed in the next period. Constant, immediate feedback Building a tea m dynamics that encourages team members to give feedback to each other, so when I’m not there (on vacation or no longer their lead) they are independent from me and they can do things together, on their own. Being a leader is beyond being a team lead I aim to follow the same principles in any relationship that I have in my life. And in the case of , that means I aim to follow them with any person in the company a founder, an early employee, or a recent one. Quite often being open about my vulnerabilities has been a foundation for the trust in any of those relationships; vulnerability and authenticity are also big themes for me in my writing on Medium. “Vessy started to be very open about her vulnerabilities, and instead of taking away from her credibility, this actually added to it. When Im facing a challenge related to how to approach a complex project or have a tough conversation with a person, I sometimes catch myself thinking: “Vessy had that anxiety. She overcame that. A nd so can I!” What you should take away from this how-to-be-a-leader article Would any of the above make you a successful leader? It depends on who you are. While most of us read books about the leadership styles of successful generals or CEOs, it’s not about imitating someone else’s style. It’s about identifying what makes your style unique, cultivating those strengths, and recognizing handy others’ practices that are relevant for you and possibly worth trying. If you recognized anything you think you should give a try, that’s fantastic. But do look into yourself. Into your upbringing. Into what makes you you. What’s next for me, now that I’m not the CMO any more?My new role is Career Industry Expert Talent Scout. I will be focused on more strategic pieces such as exploring different business models for , scouting for talent, and occasionally write articles for our blog.

Why you cant afford to ignore office politics

Why you can't afford to ignore office politics Why you can't afford to ignore office politics Office politics. Cliques. Hierarchies. Alignments. Can’t live with ’em, can’t do business without ‘em.But what if you really, really don’t like dealing with office politics? Would it help to know that you’re not alone? Because you’re not; far from it.Office politics is difficult and painfulResearchers Marian N. Ruderman and Patricia J. Ohlott recently discovered that many female managers feel that engaging in political behavior is difficult and painful. Some even viewed it as “evil”.Evil may be a rather strong word, but my experience has been that most women find it hard to see how navigating office politics can be anything other than a negative experience. Not only is it unpleasant, but office politics can be a tough task to master.According to a pre-workshop survey of 100 aspiring women leaders in hi-tech who attended my workshop in 2013, only 2% “strongly agreed” that they knew how to navigate office politics in a positive, effective way.So we’ve establishe d that if you don’t exactly jump out of bed every morning, excited to go to work and play the game of office politics, you aren’t alone. But here’s the thing: by ignoring office politics, you could be hurting your career in more ways than you can imagine.Politically savvy people do better in their careersResearch by the Center for Creative Leadership showed that people who are politically savvy have better career prospects, better career trajectories, and are seen as more promotable. They are also less likely to succumb to career-limiting derailment. An author and careers expert, Erin Burt notes, “Avoiding (office) politics altogether can be deadly for your career. Every workplace has an intricate system of power, and you can - and should - work it ethically to your best advantage.”Any way you look at it, office politics are here to stay. But the good news is that there are ways to get better at it, and they’re probably a lot easier than you think. You can learn to be po sitively politically savvySo what can be done to make office politics more palatable and easier to navigate? The answer: build the skill of being positively politically savvy. The authors of Political Skill at Work (Davies-Black, 2010), the result of over two decades of research into organizational politics, claim that political skill is not necessarily manipulative. “ … properly applied,” they say, “it makes good things happen, both for those who use it and for the organizations in which they work.” They identified four competencies of people who are positively political:1. Social astuteness; 2. Interpersonal influence; 3. Networking ability; 4. Sincerity. In other words, build your influencing and networking skills, and do it with sincerity â€" and positivity â€" to succeed. While you’re doing that, pay attention to the social dynamics that surround you at work, and you’ll build positive skills for navigating office politics, and as a bonus â€" become more promotable. And that’s not evil at all, is it?!Additional Resources: Ruderman, M.N. and Ohlott, P.J. Not only are they gaining hands-on experience, earning school credit, and hopefully a stipend for their work, interns are excited to help you. Below are some expert suggestions on how to be a super-star mentor to your summer intern.Find out the goals of your internThe core of any successful mentor/mentee relationship is rooted in learning opportunities and the intern’s goals aligning with business needs. “Therefore it’s vital for people managing summer interns to first find out what the intern is looking to get out of their experience with the company,” says Kris Hughes, who leads social media initiatives at software company  ProjectManager.com. “Many internships are doomed to failure before they ever start because there isn’t alignment between what the intern seeks from the experience the business need of the mentor who will be mentoring them.”Fo llow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Share clear expectationsStart off the relationship with your summer intern on the right foot by giving them a quick orientation of the program, what is required of them, and what they can expect going forward, says Chris Chancey, career expert, professional recruiter, and the owner of Amplio Recruiting. “This initial structure is incredibly helpful for someone who has minimal or no experience with the workplace.”Encourage them to share their ideasIt is not enough to let your intern sit in meetings; during those meetings, whether it is with a client or with team members, call on them and ask their thoughts on the subject of discussion. “Ask them to contribute ideas to solve certain problems and be ready to assist them to convey their message better whenever necessary,” Chancey says.Entrust them with a special projectFind a project that can be re-booted with the help of an eager intern. “Every company has some research project or analysis that keeps getting back-burnered,” states Aileen Gallagher, associate professor, Magazine, News and Digital Journalism at Syracuse University’s S. George Herman Babcock

George Herman Babcock George Herman Babcock George Herman Babcock Engineer and inventor George Herman Babcock was a leading 19th century innovator in safe steam boiler technology. Through his patents of pumps, steam engines, and novel boiler designs with collaborator Stephen Wilcox and through his efforts as ASME's sixth president Babcock raised the standard for safe boiler design and advocated for industry-wide codes governing their safe manufacture, maintenance, and operation. Boiler explosions were tragically common in the early, pre-code days of steam power. One of the worst was the February 1850 blast that devastated the manufacturing headquarters of A.B. Taylor Co. hatters on Hague Street in lower Manhattan. More than 60 workers many of them young boys and bystanders were killed and 70 more were injured when the building collapsed into its foundation. Although it would take another 65 years and thousands more explosions before state and federal regulators would adopt regulations based on ASME's established Boiler Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC), disasters like Hague Street and the later Grover Shoe Factory explosion in Massachusetts triggered a chain of technical innovations designed to increase the safety of these powerful but persnickety machines. Babcock was born in 1832 in Unadilla Forks, NY, into a family with prolific inventors on both sides. Growing up in New York and Rhode Island, he followed in the family mechanical tradition, helping his father to invent color printing presses and devices for the newspaper and printing industries. These experiences fueled his growing interest in photography and Daguerreotyping, and for the rest of his life he retained an active interest in art and books that complemented his business and engineering pursuits. Babcock gained additional practical experience during the Civil War years as a draftsman and ship builder, eventually becoming chief draftsman at the Hope Iron Works in Providence. Babcock's childhood friendship with Stephen Wilcox, a talented engineer and mechanic in his own right, evolved into a fruitful business relationship between the two men. In 1857, in the aftermath of the Hague Street Explosion, Wilcox introduced the water tube boiler, a safer, more efficient step in boiler technology. In this design, external combustion gases heated tubes through which flowing water was converted into steam and collected in a drum. Because this design safely permitted higher-pressure operation than earlier versions, the water-tube boiler was readily accepted as the industry standard. The two men joined forces to patent additional engine, pump, and boiler designs. In 1867, they established the firm of Babcock Wilcox (BW) to commercialize boilers based on Wilcox's earlier water tube principle. Their signature product, the Babcock Wilcox Non-Explosive Boiler, used a sectional tubular design. The company was incorporated in 1881 with Babcock as president and Wilcox as vice president. BW boilers soon were powering the nation's first central electrical stations in Philadelphia and New York City, including Thomas Edison's Pearl Street station in Manhattan. In 1870, in the midst of this exciting period of discovery, Babcock moved his family to Plainfield, NJ, a community that would benefit from his passionate support for nearly 30 years. His interest in arts and letters translated into a founding role and generous financial support for the Plainfield Public Library. Even as he managed BW's growing international business, published in important technical journals, and held high rank in organizations such as ASME, he found time to play an active role in the community's local business, political, educational, and religious affairs. Babcock was active in ASME when the young organization issued its 1884 Boiler Testing Code, which provided the earliest standards for the otherwise unregulated industry. However, he did not live to see the formation of ASME's Boiler Code Committee in 1911 or the subsequent 1915 publication of the BPVC, which was the basis for most of the boiler safety laws across the nation. He died in 1893 in Plainfield, only weeks after the death of his lifelong friend and partner, Stephen Wilcox. Today, BW remains world leader in the power generation industry and is a major operating unit of McDermott International, a worldwide energy services company. In 2012, Technology Review listed the company as one of the nation's 50 most innovative technology companies. Michael MacRae is an independent writer.Boiler explosions were tragically common in the early, pre-code days of steam power.

Brief Article Teaches You the Ins and Outs of Microservices Resume and What You Should Do Today

Brief Article Teaches You the Ins and Outs of Microservices Resume and What You Should Do Today What You Must Know About Microservices Resume Needless to say, building a service that doesn't have to have configuration changed in any respect during its lifetime will be absolutely the most desirable strategy, if that's possible. It make sense to use the SRP to service design also. For instance, an application might consist of services like the purchase management assistance, the customer management service etc.. It consists of a set of services. Life After Microservices Resume The number of individuals required will go up as you become more microservices. If you're wasting time on the incorrect things and your competitors are not, you're likely to have a really terrible moment. The very first reaction non-development IT people have when seeing their institution's microservice is extremely much like a parent looking at their youngster's art. Some businesses are so eager to loc ate an individual with Microservice experience they even put Microservice in the work title. An early microservice implementation may come in a costly rework. The Kafka Streams API boasts quite a few capabilities which make it well suited for keeping up the worldwide state of a distributed system. Microservices are small elements of an application developed to carry out a particular function. So you suddenly have a whole lot more fine-grained control over the various parts of your application. Much like your application, you are going to want to test and enhance your new deployment mechanism. If your system is connected with lots of components and needs specialized skills, then you want to restrict the access. The New Fuss About Microservices Resume If you intend to stay with your present employer for some time, you're better off if they can receive results (and the money that arrives from results) more quickly. While the promise of microservices it that you can quickly a dd functionality if it's done properly, there's a time investment in order to do it correctly. One of the greatest methods to draw the interest of high-quality companies is via the acquisition and demonstration ofMicroservices. You're going to want to ensure your team is well-trained to be able to manage the system in production. If you've gone through the former article (click here in order to view it) about Zuul, you might have a notion of the best way to do the route mapping with URI. Here we parse the incoming message and verify the metadata object to understand which topic the received data is for, so we are able to execute the suitable action. Over time it's often really hard to maintain a decent modular structure, making it more difficult to continue to keep changes that ought to only affect 1 module within that module. If another method registers with the identical id, it's treated as a restart (for example some kind of failover or recovery) and the very first process registration is discarded. Encryption of microservices is the ideal method in protecting data while it's in transit. Employing Y-axis splits might allow it to be much harder to iterate rapidly. Containers are not always required in aMicroservices architecture, but they're a fantastic way to deployMicroservices and offer a consistent approach to manage applications. Single-Page Applications are that which we have a tendency to use today. The War Against Microservices Resume Many different kinds of capabilities are hosted by messaging middleware in the event of SOA that aren't found in MSA. Presumably, there's a business reason for the code you're writing. Just think of a scenario where the application comprises a substantial number of microservices. Look for solutions to problems you've got. An increasing number of companies want programmers with the capability to fulfill a more agile marketplace that demands rapid alterations and development. Microservices are getting more and more popular and many are opting to transition away from monolithic architecture. Just like any emerging technologies and trends, there's some learning to be done in order to master it. Microservices as a trend bring a great deal of change to the day-to-day lives of software developers! Diversifying security will assist in securing each microservice and there is not any need to be concerned about security. Below mentioned are a few of the essential security considerations. In the event the need doesn't justify a microservice, then you're often better off finding another location where it's justified and where you are able to demonstrate the benefits, instead of building something eloquent that isn't needed. The most important motive behind security is to let the correct people into the computer system. The Lost Secret of Microservices Resume Even in the event that you understand your architecture and patterns perfectly it's still not that simple to be somewhat suc cessful with Microservices. TheMicroservice architectural pattern isn't generally linked to a certain programming language. There are lots of patterns associated with the microservices pattern. Life After Microservices Resume You've got to mention location of the Eureka Server by employing defaultZoneproperty. Employing preemptible resources may look like an odd selection for a mission-critical provider, but due to our microservices design, we could use Preemptible VMs and GPUs without losing data or needing to compose elaborate retry code. Since all 3 servers utilised within this application are in exactly the same project, they'd automatically use precisely the same configuration. Likewise if an update is required to a single API endpoint, it can be deployed independently of the remainder of the API, with no downtime.
